The following checklist is a guide to the standard. On moving in you should expect that:
- All statutory repairs and those which affect your health and safety will have been completed
- All rubbish will have been removed from inside and outside of the property
- All floors will be swept and clean
- All cupboards and kitchen units will be clean
- All bathroom and toilet fittings will be clean and free from cracks
- An electrical safety test will have been done
- A gas safety test will have been done and you will be given a copy of the landlord safety certificate.
If your new home doesn’t meet the standard please contact your housing officer who will help to put things right.
Gas, electricity and water supplies
You will be shown where the gas and electricity meters and the water stop-tap are fitted, and how to turn them on and off, when you are shown around your new home.
As soon as you can, make sure that you contact the gas, electricity and water suppliers to come and read the meters and to put the accounts into your name. You may also find it useful to take your own meter readings so that you can check the details when you get your first bill.
Find out more about gas safety under the Home Safety page
Heating
When a property is empty the gas supply pipe is capped off for safety reasons. When you sign up for the tenancy, arrangements will be made with you to have the supply reconnected.
When the gas supply is reconnected and tested, the gas engineer will explain to you how the heating system works.
You will also find information / instruction labels on fires, boilers, hot water cylinders and showers (if fitted).
Who to notify that you have moved home
Don’t forget to:
- Change your address details with your employer, the benefits agency, your bank and any other contacts
- Tell Daventry District Council about your new address and moving in date so that they can sort out your council tax. It is especially important to do this quickly if you receive Housing or Council tax benefit.
