Everybody needs good neighbours

Daventry and District Housing is encouraging residents to get to know each other better by organising their own local event to mark European Neighbours’ Day on May 26.

European Neighbours’ Day is an annual event which started in 1999 in Paris and is now celebrated in over 28 countries throughout Europe.

Its aim is to bring communities together, promote cohesion and neighbourliness and make local communities a friendlier place.

Organising an event is straightforward. Daventry and District Housing has started the process by putting together party ‘starter packs’ containing all the goodies needed to get a party into full swing. The packs include ideas for an event, posters, balloons, party poppers and a disposable camera to capture the highlights.

All residents need to do is find a venue such as a play area, community centre, a garden and then decide whether to hold a family day, barbecue or something more creative such as a community clean-up or arts and crafts day or simply just a cuppa in the comfort of your front room!

Ciara Gill, community development manager at Daventry and District Housing, said: “We are delighted to be supporting European Neighbours’ Day to help bring local people together. Events such as this give residents a chance to get to know their neighbours better and play an active part in their community.”

If you would like to receive a party starter pack, contact the community development team on 01327 707500 or pop into the office. Packs will be available from 18th May 2009.
